How does it work?

Azelaic acid functions on the basis ofantimicrobial activity and normalization of keratinization. Keratinization means the process by which epithelial cells mature as they move towards the skin surface and then desquamated. The European Union classifies azelaic acid as a cosmetic ingredient that can be applied without concentration restrictions. Knowing that it’s an active ingredient it is used in higher percentages as a prescription ingredient in the US.  Usually 12% and higher.  

It has multifunction attributes for Acne (targeting C-Acnes bacteria), Rosacea with its anti-inflammatory mediation and pigment suppression.  It reduces inflammatory lesions and erythema in rosacea patients and also inhibits neutrophilic ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) we mostly know this term as Free Radicals. 

Azelaic acid is also proven to inhibit the 5a-reductase enzyme that converts  testosterone to 5a-dihydrotestosterone which is the major cause of initial inflammation when acne formation begins.
